Came from an ice hockey oriented family. His brother Dan was an NHL linesman and his uncle George Armstrong had a great NHL career, being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Had a great junior career. Dubbed as the next superstar in the NHL.
At the 1977 World Junior Championships he led all scorers in goals, assists and points. He was chosen as the best forward of the tournament.
McCourt was an enigmatic center with a good overall arsenal. He wasn’t the greatest skater but made up for that with smartness and great playmaking skills.
Became property of the Los Angeles Kings as a compensation for a previous player signing. He took the matter to court, but lost.
He later said that the lengthy court battle and the subsequent blackballing by the NHL and many NHL players cost him his love affair with the NHL.
He eventually left North America to play in Switzerland for almost a decade before retiring in 1992.
Went on to coach for a while in Europe (assistant coach for Italy) before moving back to Canada, working as a truck driver.
