Older brother of Brian Mullen.
He first played roller hockey with his brothers in the schoolyard across the street from where they lived in New York - 49th Street between Ninth and Tenth.
His dad worked at Madison Square Garden, so Joe naturally grew up rooting for the NY Rangers.
Hockey heroes growing up included Brad Park, Rod Gilbert and Vic Hadfield.
Enjoyed watching Rick Middleton and Mike Bossy play when he was active himself.
First American to score 500 goals and 1000 points in the NHL.
Scored many goals thanks to his ability of combined patience, anticipation and a lightning quick release of his shot.
Not very big, but was strong along the boards and had good balance.
Retired in 1997 but made a brief comeback for USA in the World Championship Qualification late in 1998.
Thought Mark Messier and Ray Bourque were the toughest competitors he ever played against.
Went on to become a hockey coach, working in the NHL.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il débuta par le roller hockey avec ses frères dans la cour d'école située dans la rue où ils vivaient à New York - la 49e rue entre la neuvième et la dixième.
Son père travaillait au Madison Square Garden, donc naturellement Joe suivait enfant les NY Rangers.
Ses idoles de jeunesse était Brad Park, Rod Gilbert ou encore Vic Hadfield.
Il adorait voir jouer Rick Middleton et Mike Bossy alors qu'il était lui-même déjà passé joueur.
Il fut le premier américain à atteindre les 500 buts et les 1 000 points dans la NHL.
Il a marqué beaucoup de buts grâce à sa patience, son anticipation et son lancer délivré très rapidement.
Pas très massif, mais solide contre les bandes et pouvant compter sur un bon équilibre.
Retraité en 1997 mais fit un bref retour avec les États-Unis pour les aider à rester dans l'élite mondiale fin 1998.
Considère Mark Messier et Ray Bourque comme les adversaires les plus forts qu'il ait eu à affronter.
Il est devenu entraîneur de hockey, travaillant dans la NHL.
Intronisé au temple de la renommée du hockey US et au temple de la renommée du hockey.
1 063 points (502+561) en 1 062 parties dans la NHL.
