One of the most dangerous offensive threats in East German ice hockey until his retirement in 1974. Represented East Germany 124 times, 84 points (53+31).
He came from Dynamo Weißwasser in 1963 to SC Dynamo Berlin and won three league titles with SC Dynamo Berlin (1966, 1967, 1968). Scored 117 (70+47) points in 113 games.
Became a successful trainer later on for a span of 40 years and won a total of 22 titles as a player and as a coach. He also coached the East German National Team.
He thought Valeri Vasiliev was the best player he played against. In East Germany he thought Frank Braun was the best he played against and Joachim Ziesche the best he played with.
He was inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame. Passed away after a short illness.

Une des plus grandes menaces offensives du hockey est-allemand jusqu'à sa retraite en 1974. 124 sélections avec la RDA, 84 points (53+31).
Arrivé du Dynamo Weißwasser en 1963, il a remporté trois titres avec le SC Dynamo Berlin (1966, 1967, 1968) et y a marqué 117 (70+47) points en 113 parties de championnat.
Devenu un entraîneur à succès pendant 40 ans, il a remporté 22 titres au total comme joueur puis coach. Il était dans le staff de l'équipe nationale d'Allemagne de l'Est de 1980 à 1990. Il aussi accompagné le Dynamo Berlin du mini-championnat à deux clubs de RDA vers la grande aventure du championnat allemand réunifié en 1990/91.
Il considérait Valeri Vasiliev comme le meilleur joueur qu'il ait affronté. En Allemagne de l'Est il citait Frank Braun comme son meilleur adversaire et Joachim Ziesche comme son meilleur coéquipier.
Intronisé dans le Hall of Fame du hockey allemand. Décédé d'une brève maladie.
