Nilsson went to school in Tumba just outside of Stockholm and then studied economy at Carlsforska Gymnasiet in Västerås.
He was considered as a good prospect as a junior and was drafted in the NHL by the San José Sharks in 1991. Unfortunately he never quite lived up to the high expectations. He played in the North American minor leagues for three seasons but never made the NHL.
Went on to play in Jokerit (Finland), Kloten (Switzerland) and Cologne (Germany).
Represented Sweden 26 times (56 as a junior).
Retired in 2006. Went on to coach. Nilsson became a certified electrician and project leader.

Nilsson a passé sa scolarité à Tumba, près de Stockholm, puis a étudié l'économie au lycée Carlsforska à Västerås.
Il a été drafté en NHL par les Sharks de San José in 1991 mais n'a jamais justifié les attentes élevées placées en lui quand il était junior.
Rentré en Suède en 1996 après avoir passé trois ans dans les ligues mineures nord-américaines sans jamais jouer en NHL, il a ensuite évolué avec les Jokerit (Finlande), Kloten (Suisse) et Cologne (Allemagne).
26 sélections en équipe de Suède senior (56 en junior).
Ayant reçu sa certification d'électricien avant la fin de sa carrière de joueur en 2006, il a aussi été entraîneur à mi-temps pendant trois ans avant de se consacrer à une carrière de chef de projets dans les installations électriques et dans la construction.
