Bearded blueliner who wasn’t the most skilled defenseman around, but made up for that with his loyalty, hard work and determination. Popular player who always put the team ahead of himself.
Also a very promising football player in his youth, and is the only Finn to win player of the year awards in both football and ice hockey.
Represented Finland 225 times (18+22).
Scored 294 (147+147) league points in 691 games and had more than 500 points in over 1000 career games.
Paired with his son Petteri Nummelin in a league game Dec.8,1993, making him the oldest player in the Finnish league at the age of 45. Retired from hockey in 1995, months before his 47th birthday !
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Défenseur barbu qui n'était pas le plus talentueux, mais qui compensait par sa loyauté, son ardeur au travail et sa détermination. Joueur populaire qui plaçait toujours l'équipe avant lui-même.
C'était aussi un footballeur très prometteur quand il était le jeune, et le seul Finlandais à avoir été élu joueur de l'année à la fois au football et au hockey sur glace.
225 sélections en équipe de Finlande, 40 points (18+22).

Apparié avec son fils Petteri Nummelin dans un match de championnat le 8 décembre 1993, ce qui en fait le joueur le plus âgé de SM-liiga finlandaise à 45 ans. Il n'a raccroché les patins qu'en 1995, quelques mois avant son 47e anniversaire !
Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 80).
