When he was eleven years old one of his first coaches back home in Toronto was a 17-year old Roger Neilson.
Graduated from St.Michael’s College, captaining the team to a Memorial Cup in 1961.
Enrolled at the University of British Columbia and University of Manitoba. Received his B.A. at UBC and completed his master’s thesis in business.
In 1970/71 he worked for Fitness and Amateur Sport Canada.
Went to Tokyo, studying further. In 1971/72 he served as a player-coach for the Seibu Railway Ice Hockey Club.
In 1972/73 season, he became a player-coach for the Kokudo Keikaku Ice Hockey Club, which was separated from Seibu Railway.
O’Malley was a five-time league All-Star in Japan, league MVP in 1975 and a three-time league champion.
Retired after the 1980 Olympics, sixteen years after his first Olympic appearance in 1964. In 1980 he was not only a player, but also the team advisor.
Limited offensively but defensively sound player who was good at clearing players out in front of his goal.
Inducted into the IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame. President for Notre Dame College.

Quand il avait onze ans, l'un de ses premiers entraîneurs à Toronto fut Roger Neilson, alors âgé de 17 ans.
Diplômé du St.Michael’s College et capitaine de cette équipe qui remporta la coupe Memorial en 1961.
Il a étudié à l'Université de Colombie Britannique et à l'Université du Manitoba. Diplômé de la première, il a écrit une thèse de master dans les affaires.
En 1970/71 il travailla pour le programme canadien d'activité physique et sportive.
Il continua ensuite à étudier à Tokyo. Entraîneur-joueur de Seibu en 1971/72 puis de Kokudo Keikaku quand il en fut séparé en 1972/73 season.
O’Malley fut désigné cinq fois sur l'équipe-type de la ligue japonaise, trois fois champion, et meilleur joueur du championnat en 1975.
Retraité après les Jeux de 1980, seize ans après sa première apparition olympique en 1964. Il y officiait comme joueur mais aussi conseiller d'équipe.
Limité offensivement mais efficace dans les tâches défensives où il brillait pour faire le ménage dans la zone de la cage.
Intonisé au temple de la renommée IIHF. Président de l'Université Notre Dame.
