Grew up in a rather wealthy family. As a kid he showed great determination as he loved playing hockey. He travelled from his native Obihiro to Kushiro every day, a 2 hour+ train ride one way, just so that he could train and play hockey.
Later studied at Tomakomai High School attached to Komazawa University. Played one year of junior hockey in Canada (Saskatchewan).
Rookie of the year in Japan after the 1995/96 season.
For unknown reasons he got in debt with the local yakuza in Yokohama, owning them a substantial amount of money.
In the end the owner of the Kokudo hockey club decided to release Otomo, who moved to Sapporo and played for Snowbrand.
This whole ordeal also meant that his days on the Japanese national team was over.
Instead he had to do favors to the Yakuza which meant shaking down people for money.
He subsequently had to retire at the age of 26.
On November 11, 2005 after having got massage, he was caught stealing 80,000 yen (ca $800 Canadian) from the purse of a "working" woman while she was having a shower in his hotel room in the Chūō-ku ward of Sapporo. "I wanted the money and did it on impuls" he said at the trial. The prosecutor demanded a one year sentence. When questioned during hearings for the trial, Otomo who was out of work (also studied at a vocational school) said that he felt really lonely after he stopped playing ice hockey. He missed the camaraderie on the teams and the whole hockey community.

Fils d'une famille aisée.
Enfant, il a fait preuve d'une grande détermination dans sa passion pour le hockey.
Il faisait le trajet de sa ville native d'Obihiro jusqu'à Kushiro tous les jours, soit un trajet de plus de 2 heures en train, juste pour pouvoir s'entraîner et jouer au hockey.
Il a étudié au lycée Tomakomai attaché à l'Université Komazawa et passé une saison en junior au Canada (Saskatchewan).
Meilleur jeune de la saison 1995/96 au Japon.
Pour des raisons inconnues, il s'est endetté auprès des yakuzas locaux de Yokohama, pour une substantielle somme d'argent.
Le propriétaire du club de hockey Kokudo a finalement décidé de libérer Otomo, qui a déménagé à Sapporo et joué pour Snowbrand.
Tout cela a également mis fin à son parcours en sélection nationale.
À cause de cela, il a dû rendre service aux Yakuza, en intimidant des gens pour de l'argent.
Il a ensuite dû prendre sa retraite de joueur à l'âge de 26 ans.
Le 11 novembre 2005, après un massage, il vola 80 000 yen (un peu moins de 500 euros) du sac à main d'une femme alors qu'elle prenait une douche dans sa chambre d'hôtel du quartier Chūō-ku de Sapporo. "Je voulais de l'argent et je l'ai pris de manière impulsive" déclara-t-il lors du procès. Le procureur a requis un an de prison. Interrogé lors de l'audience, Otomo, alors sans emploi (il suivait une formation professionnelle), a déclaré qu'il se sentait vraiment seul après avoir arrêté le hockey sur glace. La camaraderie de ses coéquipiers et de la communauté du hockey lui manquait.
