Older brother of Simon Nielsen. His father Frits also represented Denmark for almost a decade.
Smart player and skilled playmaker with great hockey sense. Good at reading the game well and a solid skater. Good at making his linemates better in the offensive zone. Strong two-way ability and setup skills. Important on special teams. One of the most underrated player in the NHL according to player polls.
Smallish by NHL standards. A bit prone to injuries because of his slight stature.
Flag-bearer of Denmark at 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
He won two championships in his career : the first year, at 16 with Herning, and the last year, at 37 with Berlin.

Frère aîné de Simon Nielsen. Son père Frits a aussi représenté le Danemark de 1973 à 1981.
Frans a participé quatre ans de suite aux Mondiaux des moins de 20 ans, la première fois à 16 ans, les deux dernières en tant que capitaine.
Joueur intelligent et créateur de jeu talentueux avec un excellent sens du hockey. Bonne lecteur de jeu et patineur fiable. Fort dans les deux sens de la glace. Important dans les unités spéciales. Cité parmi les joueurs les plus sous-estimés de la NHL d'après les sondages réalisés auprès de ses confrères, il rend ses partenaires meilleurs en zone offensive, notamment par ses passes.
Taille moyenne pour les standards de la NHL (184 cm, 84 kg). Sujet aux blessures.
Porte-drapeau du Danemark aux Jeux olympiques d'hiver 2022 à Pékin.
Il a été champion deux fois dans sa carrière : la première année, à 16 ans avec Herning, et la dernière, à 37 ans avec Berlin.
