Son of Aleksandr Barkov Sr who represented Russia in the 1990s.
Began playing ice hockey at the age of four. Grew up idolizing Teemu Sel nne.
In October 2013 he became the youngest post expansion (1967) player to score a goal in the NHL. At the 2014 Winter Olympics he became the youngest Finnish winter Olympian ever.
Ideal size and strength for the center position at the NHL level. Very hardworking player who trained a lot at a young age.
Not extremely physical but good at competing for every square inch of ice. A lot of poise and playmaking ability.
Voted the NHL's most underestimated player in a league players' poll in 2023.
Shortly before Barkov became the first Finnish capitain to win the Stanley Cup (2024 with the Florida Panthers), Wayne Gretzky called him the best defensive forward in the NHL in the last three decades.

Il a commencé le hockey à quatre ans et a grandi avec Teemu Selänne comme idole.
En octobre 2013 il est devenu le plus jeune joueur depuis l'expansion (1967) à marquer un but en NHL. En 2014 il est devenu le plus jeune Finlandais de l'histoire à participer aux Jeux olympiques d'hiver.
Sa taille et sa force sont idéales pour la position de centre au niveau NHL. Joueur très travailleur qui s'est beaucoup entraîné dès son jeune âge.
Pas extrêmement physique, mais bon pour lutter pour chaque centimètre carré de glace. Beaucoup de sang-froid et de créativité.
Élu joueur le plus sous-estimé de NHL par un sondage auprès des hockeyeurs de la ligue en 2023.
Peu avant que Barkov ne devienne le premier Finlandais vainqueur de la Coupe Stanley en tant que capitaine (l'édition 2024 avec les Panthers de Floride), Wayne Gretzky l'a défini comme le meilleur attaquant défensif de NHL des trois dernières décennies.
