Son of Belarusian player Viktor Karachun. He trained with his father until his death when he was 9.
Alexander grew up in Heilbronn, his father's last club, with his mother. He also has relatives in Minsk. German/Belarusian dual national.
As a child, he played hockey in his garden and his basement. Neighbours had hard times because of the noise of the puck hitting the wall.
Robust winger (188 m, 92 kg) with lot of strength and fighting spirit. A strong presence in front of the net. Eager to train and get better.
Studied International Business in Heilbronn, then followed an online course in economy.
His 18 goals in 2021/22 (he had scored 11 goals in four DEL seasons beforehand) enabled him to join German national team at 27. Elected player of the game twice in seven tests, vs Switzerland in Rosenheim and in the last game vs Austria in front of a Schwenningen home crowd who chanted "Karachun, Karachun" during the whole game. The next day his name was included in World Championship roster in Helsinki. There his roommate was Daniel Fischbuch, a childhood friend which came from the same club (Heilbronn).
