Defenseman with great size. Defensively oriented and seldom joined the attacks.
Represented Germany 30 times. During 1998 World Championships, he was on a pair with Klaus Micheller, another Kaufbeuren product though they had never played together before. The tournament with a collective failure and a relegation for Germany, but Mayer was on the ice only during one goal against and finished with the team's better plus/minus (+6).
Spent the last decade of his career playing in the lower German leagues. Retired in 2009.
Worked as a policeman in civilian life. Coached Kaufbeuren youth teams, and the German U-16 team from 2017 to 2019.

Défenseur d'excellent gabarit. À vocation défensive, il se joignait rarement aux attaques mais commettait peu d'erreurs.
30 sélections en équipe d'Allemagne. Au championnat du monde 1998, il forme une paire avec Klaus Micheller, originaire comme lui de Kaufbeuren, mais avec lequel il n'avait jamais joué. Le Mondial s'achève par un échec collectif et une relégation, mais Mayer n'est présent sur la glace que pendant un seul but encaissé et termine de loin avec la meilleure fiche (+6).
Il a passé la dernière décennie de sa carrière de joueur dans les divisions inférieures allemandes. Retraité en 2009.
Policier dans le civil. Entraîneur de jeunes à Kaufbeuren, et sélectionneur des moins de 16 ans allemands de 2017 à 2019.
