Highly regarded as a junior. His play reminded scouts of Russ Courtnall or Jeremy Roenick.
Noted as an explosive and very speedy skater who played with a physical edge. Game breaker. Not easily intimidated.
Used to play as a center but wasn’t the most creative playmaker and alternated between being a center and winger.
Used more as a defensive specialist in later years when his tenacious checking came to good use.
His last involvement in the NHL came with the attempt to make a return to the New York Islanders roster for the 2010/11 season.
After accepting an invitation to training camp he was subsequently released at the conclusion and decided to retire.
He thought Jaromir Jagr was the toughest player to play against.
McAmmond mostly enjoyed playing on a line with Craig Conroy and Jarome Iginla in Calgary.

Très coté quand il était junior. Son jeu suscita la comparaison avec Russ Courtnall ou Jeremy Roenick.
Patineur explosif et très rapide avec un jeu physique. Il pouvait faire basculer un match et n'était pas facile à intimider.
Il était centre mais n'était le joueur le plus créatif et alternait donc entre le centre et l'aile.
Dans les dernières années il s'est spécialisé dans le jeu défensif où sa tenacité dans le marquage était une grande force.
Sa dernière implication en NHL est venue avec une tentative de retour chez les Islanders de New York pour la saison 2010/11.
Après avoir accepté une invitation au camp d'entraînement, il ne fut finalement pas conservé et décida de prendre sa retraite.
Il considérait Jaromir Jagr comme le meilleur joueur qu'il ait eu à affronter.
McAmmond a principalement apprécié d'avoir joué sur une ligne avec Craig Conroy et Jarome Iginla chez les Flames de Calgary.
Une personne très religieuse.
