Steady and durable blueliner who seldom had a bad game.
Captained the Under-20 West German National Team in the 1983 World Junior Championships, his third consecutive tournament in this age category.
Left his home team Bad Tölz (second division) in 1983 to sign with Mannheim. Voted as the newcomer of the year in the German Bundesliga.
Five-time German champion with Düsseldorf (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996).
723 Bundesliga/DEL games, 443 points (104+339). Represented West Germany/Germany 210 times, scored 56 points (15+41).
Married an Italian woman from Milan. They got seven children together, including two ice hockey players, Mathias and goaltender Leon. Their intermediate brother Yannick aimed to play pro football with Bayer Leverkusen, but his career was stopped by a severe knee injury. Their sister Zoe was a figure skater and was hired for Holiday on Ice.
Retired in 2000. Coached the juniors of Düsseldorf. Also worked as an expert commentator on hockey during 11 years.
He got a Heilpraktiker (non-medical healing practitioner) diploma but didn't use it work. He founded a home care company though.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Il a participé trois ans de suite aux championnats du monde des moins de 20 ans et a été le capitaine ouest-allemand aux Mondiaux juniors 1983.
Il a quitté son club d'origine de Bad Tölz (deuxième division) en 1983 pour signer avec Mannheim et y être élu meilleur débutant de Bundesliga.
Quintuple champion d'Allemagne avec Düsseldorf (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996).
723 matches de Bundesliga/DEL, 443 points (104+339). Il a marqué 56 points (15+41) en 210 sélections en équipe d'Allemagne.
Il a épousé une Italienne originaire de Milan. Ils ont eu sept enfants, dont deux ont joué à leur tour en équipe première pour Düsseldorf : Mathias et le gardien Leon. Le frère intermédiaire Yannick visait une carrière de footballeur au Bayer Leverkusen, avant qu'elle ne soit interrompue par une doublure rupture des ligaments croisés. Leur sœur Zoe a fait du patinage artistique et a participé à Holiday on Ice.
Retraité en 2000. Il a entraîné les juniors de Düsseldorf. Il a aussi commenté à la télévision sur Sky pendant 11 ans.
Il a une formation de Heilpraktiker (praticien en médecine naturelle) mais n'exerce pas. Il a en revanche fondé une entreprises de soins à domicile 24h/24.
Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
