Born in Sweden to Finnish parents. Moved to Finland at the age of one.
Offensively skilled defenseman. Accurate passer and swift skater. Mobile puck-mover.
Often quarterbacked powerplays having both a hard and accurate shot. Equally adept at shooting slapshots as wristshots.
Inconsistent defensively, sometimes out of position. A bit nonchalant at times which could turn into turnovers.
Established a Swedish Elite league record for most points in a season by a defenseman in 2007. After that fine season he signed a contract with Nashville but was never able to establish himself in the NHL. Niskala was the property of three NHL teams in a span of a week (Nashville, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay). He scored his only NHL goal in his third game on October 11 vs Carolina and Mike Leighton.
During his last three seasons he captained Lukko. Announced his retirement on April 4, 2019.
Niskala went on to help coaching the Lukko junior players.

Né en Suède de parents finlandais qui ont déménagé en Finlande quand il avait un an.
Défenseur offensif, mobile, aimant conduire le palet, avec un patinage vif et des passes précises.
Clé de voûte en jeu de puissance car il était capable de décocher des tirs du poignet comme des slaps, à la fois précis et puissants.
Inconsistant défensivement, parfois hors de position. Sa nonchalance avec le palet pouvait parfois causer des pertes de palet.
En 2007 il a établi un record d'Elitserien suédoise de points marqués en une saison par un défenseur. Celui lui a valu de signer un contrat avec Nashville mais n'a jamais pu s'établir en NHL. Il a été la propriété de trois franchises en l'espace d'une semaine (Nashville, Philadelphie, Tampa Bay). Il a marqué son seul but en NHL à son troisième match, le 11 octobre 2007 face à Mike Leighton (Carolina).
3 points marqués (1+2) en 6 parties de saison régulière de NHL. Champion du monde 2011.
Capitaine de Lukko pendant ses trois dernières saisons, il a annoncé sa retraite le 4 avril 2019.
Niskala a ensuite été entraîneur-adjoint des juniors de Lukko.
