Right-shooting center with good hockey sense and a fine shot. Vertical style of play. Very good at faceoffs.
Adept at swiftly transporting the puck. Nifty passer and stickhandler. Hard bodychecker. Slow skater.
Played football until he was 16 Helped Canada to win a gold medal at the 2008 U-18 World Junior Championships in Kazan.
Went on to play in Russia in 2016. On March 16, 2022, O’Dell left Dynamo Moscow in the middle of playoffs due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine... but signed fot the same KHL club the next year. His children remained in an American school in Moscow.
Released by Dynamo Moscow late 2024. He had been plagued by back problems for months and had lost 10 kg because he took painkillers which damaged his stomach. His former teammate Dmitrij Jaškin helped him to join him in his new team Kazan.

Joueur au bon positionnement offensif et au jeu très vertical. Centre droitier, très efficace aux mises au jeu.
Passeur précis et habile. Lancer correct. Gros travailleur aux dures mises en échec mais patineur lent.
Il a joué au football jusqu'à 16 ans et a longtemps hésité entre les deux sports. Champion du monde U18 en 2008 à Kazan.
Il posa ses valises en Russie en 2016. Le 16 mars 2022, O’Dell quitta subitement le Dynamo Moscou pendant les play-offs du fait de l'invasion russe en Ukraine... mais resigna pour ce même club de KHL la saison suivante. Ses enfants sont restés scolarisés dans une école américaine à Moscou.
Il a souffert de problèmes de dos et la prise durable d'antalgiques opiacés a endommagé son estomac et lui a fait perdre 10 kilos. Le Dynamo a alors résilié son contrat fin 2024 mais son ex-coéquipier Dmitrij Jaškin l'a alors fait engager à Kazan.
