His father Edgars Buncis, who won a World Junior Championship bronze medal in canoe in 1993, was Arena Riga director from 2005 to 2012 and was hired twice as Latvian Hockey Federation sports director. He didn't skate before he was 25 but his son Filips started ice hockey at five.
Filips is a two-way center with big size (6'4") and a decent skating technique. Quite strong on faceoffs. Physical in the slot area.
Helped Latvia Under 18 team to get promoted into elite (2015) and to stay there (2016). He also gained promotion with Under 20 team (2017) but got relegated one year later (2018).
Played six years in the USA (NAHL and NCAA) before coming back to Europe (Krefeld) in 2020.
Continental Cup 2023 winner with Nitra though he got a head injury in the first game of final tournament in Angers. Danish champion 2025 with Odense.

Son père Edgars Buncis, médaillé de bronze au championnat du monde junior 1993 en canoë biplace, fut le directeur de l'Arena Riga de 2005 à 2012 et a été embauché à deux reprises comme directeur sportif de la fédération lettone de hockey (LHF). Il ne s'est mis à patiner qu'à 25 ans mais son fils Filips a commencé le hockey sur glace à 5 ans.
Filips est un centre défensif de gros gabarit (193 cm, 100 kg) et de bonnes bases techniques de patinage. Assez fort aux mises au jeu, physique devant le filet adverse.
Il a participé à la montée (2015) puis au maintien dans l'élite (2016) de l'équipe de Lettonie des moins de 18 ans. Il a aussi obtenu la promotion avec les moins de 20 ans (2017) mais a cette fois connu la relégation (2018).
Il a passé six années aux États-Unis (NAHL et NCAA) avant de revenir en Europe (Krefeld) en 2020.
Vainqueur de la Coupe Continentale 2023 avec Nitra mais blessé à la tête au premier match du tournoi final à Angers. Champion du Danemark 2025 avec Odense.
