Milan Hejduk

Hejduk, Milan

Position : RW

14-02-1976 Ústí nad Labem, TCH (CZE)

Youth team / club formateur : HC Slovan Ústí nad Labem

Began playing hockey at 6. His favorite team growing up was the Slovak based club VSŽ Košice. His childhood favorite player was Vladimir Růžička.
Player with excellent soft hands and great instincts to find open ice. Very good in traffic. Ultra-quick wristshot at a moment's notice.
Rather small and light frame ment taking a lot of abuse from the opposition's most physical players. Tendency to wear down at the end of a season.
A late call-up to replace Vinny Prospal at the 1998 Olympics in a team with his idol Růžička as captain. He blocked a Russian player - which would probably be called an intereference nowadays - on Svoboda gold medal goal.
Injured by a puck in the face in his first world championship game.
Didn't understand any English when he came to the NHL and understood his task thanks to the arrows on the whiteboard.
Won the Stanley Cup in 2001 with the Colorado Avalanche. Czech champion 2005 with Pardubice (like his father in 1973).
In 2003 he got the Maurice Richard trophy (NHL best goalscorer) and was elected Czech player of the year.
Officially announced his retirement on February 24, 2014. Trained his children's teams during eight years, then became ambassador for the development of hockey in Colorado. Milan's two sons can speak Czech but are Americans and Marek played for the USA junior teams.
