His father Johann played hockey in the NLA and NLB. Steve Hirschi grew up in Zollbrück in the Emmental.
Defenseman with solid allround skills. Good at reading the plays. Above average technical skills and a hard/accurate shot.
A bit of an undersized blueliner (180cm, 5'11") and not particularly physical.
Swiss champion 2006 with Lugano: he came back to play during the final after 16 injections though his knee had been badly injured in the firs playoff game.
Had 13 surgeries and also had asthma and allergy since he was 15. Said he suffered from body acidification. Tried many things before successfully converting to veganism at 32.
Announced his retirement on February 23, 2017. His number 8 has been retired by HC Lugano. Went on to work as a junior hockey coach.

Son père Johann, défenseur lui aussi, a longtemps joué en LNA et LNB (Langnau, Sierre...). Steve a grandi à Zollbrück dans l'Emmental.
Défenseur complet, pas très imposant (1,80m) ni rude dans le jeu.
Assez offensif par sa lecture du jeu, sa technique au-dessus de la moyenne, son tir puissant et précis.
Champion de Suisse 2006 avec Lugano en ayant rejoué en finale avec 16 infiltrations alors qu'il s'était gravement blessé au genou au premier match des play-offs.
Opéré 13 fois au total, il faisait aussi de l'asthme et des allergies depuis ses 15 ans, disant souffrir d'un corps acidifié. Après avoir tout tenté, des médicaments à l'acupuncture ou au thé, il s'est converti avec succès à 32 ans à l'alimentation végane, ce qui l'obligeait parfois à cuisiner lui-même en déplacement.
Il a annoncé sa retraite le 23 février 2017 après 14 saisons avec le HC Lugano, qui a retiré son numéro 8. Devenu entraîneur de juniors.
