Born in Kisarazu, Chiba prefecture, and a player who had to overcome a lot of moving, but never gave up his love for ice hockey. Due to his father's work commitment, the family moved to Tomakomai, located in northern Japan, in the Hokkaido prefecture. When Yutaka went to fifth grade, his family moved once again, this time to Yokohama, not far from Tokyo.
There he played for Shinigawa Prince junior team. Shortly therafter he had to change schools again, this time the family moved to Tokuyama City, in the Yamaguchi prefecture. He went on to play for a team in nearby Hiroshima. As he entered high school, he moved from his family and went back to Tomakomai, in order to pursue his hockey career.
Also studied at Waseda University. Played rugby and basketball before ice hockey became his favorite sport. Six time Japanese league champion. Retired in 2009.

Né à Kisarazu dans la préfécture de Chiba, tout près de Tokyo, Yutaka Kawaguchi a beaucoup déménagé durant sa jeunesse à cause des obligations professionnelles de son père. Parti à Tomakomai, dans la préfecture d'Hokkaido, une ville berceau du hockey japonais, il est ensuite revenu pendant son adolescence dans la périphérie de Tokyo, à Yokohama.
Sa passion pour la glace ne s'est jamais démentie malgré tous ces déplacements, bien qu'il ait également joué au rugby et au basket. Une fois à Yokohama, Kawaguchi a intégré les juniors de Shinigawa Prince... avant qu'un nouveau déménagement ne l'amène à Tokuyama, dans la préfecture de Yamaguchi, tout au sud de l'île d'Honshu, la principale de l'archipel. Il s'inscrivit alors dans un club situé non loin, à Hiroshima.
Puis, une fois au lycée, c'est lui qui prit ses quartiers ailleurs, mais de son propre chef. À Tomakomai en l'occurrence, pour poursuivre sa carrière de hockeyeur même si c'est en fin de compte au Kokudo de Yokohama qu'il percera et deviendra six fois champion du Japon. Finit aux Seibu Prince Rabbits et se retire en 2009.
