His ancestors came from Germany to Baltic area, Russia and then Finland.
Received his first goalie equipment during Christmas 1975.
North American style of play. Very good at covering angles and challenging the shooters.
First goaltender to win four Finnish championships (three with TPS and one with Jokerit from 1989 to 1992).
Played two seasons in North America (AHL). Voted the best goalie at the 1991 World Championships and was an All-Star at the 1992 World Championships.
Retired in 1999. Became a goaltending coach.
Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ses ancêtres avaient quitté l'Allemagne pour la Baltique, puis pour la Russie et la Finlande.
On lui offre son premier équipement de gardien à Noël en 1975 et le charme agit.
Fardien au style nord-américain, doué pour boucher les angles et défier les attaquants au moment du tir.
Premier gardien à remporter quatre titres de champion de Finlande, de 1989 à 1992 avec TPS puis avec les Jokerit la dernière année.
Meilleur gardien du Mondial 1991, puis dans l'équipe-type du Mondial 1992, il est alors drafté par les Sabres mais se contente de deux saisons en AHL (de 1993 à 1995) et rentre en Europe, en Suède.
Retraité en 1999. Devenu entraîneur des gardiens pour les Jokerit, en Liiga comme en KHL, puis en Allemagne et en Suisse.
Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 160).
