Andrei Khomutov

Khomutov, Andrei Valentinovich

Position : RW

21-04-1961 Yaroslavl, URS (RUS)

Youth team / club formateur : CSKA Moskva

Irrational player with tremendous skating and technique. Never looked like a stereotypical hockey player with his frail physique. Looked more along the lines of a pianist or violinist. But his looks fooled many. Khomutov was usually the first player in the rink and the last one to leave it.
Played 421 league games, scoring 344 points (197+147). Represented Soviet Union 226 times (88 goals) and also represented Russia. Often played with Valeri Kamensky and Vyacheslav Bykov.
Had a career-ending knee injury in 1998 after having played his last eight seasons in Switzerland where he racked up 615 points (273+342) in 315 games.
Went on to coach hockey in Switzerland (ultimately with his beloved HC Fribourg-Gottéron), Russia (KHL) and the Kazakhstan national team. Almost became a coach for Belarus but eventually declined the offer. An accurate decision in retrospect.
Inducted into the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame.
