Defenseman with a good understanding of the game and a calm demeanor. Strong-willed in puck battles. Some stickhandling flaws. He can be beaten one-on-one by skilled forwards.
Kienass made headlines for a trend-setting court ruling in Germany that was in the same breath as the Bosman ruling. In 1992 his contract ended with his former club EHC Dynamo Berlin who demanded a 140,000 DM (ca $ 90.000 US) transfer fee from his new club. This transfer fee was legally challenged and ultimately declared to be unlawful in 1996 by the Federal Labour Court.
The Bosman ruling declared that transfer fees between clubs in the EU when switching teams at the end of a contract was illegal. This and the Kienass ruling was set for future German domestic transfers.
Drafted in the NHL by Boston Bruins 1991. Represented Germany 97 times. Retired in 2008.

Ce défenseur aux nerfs solides et à la bonne compréhension du jeu mettait beaucoup d'engagement dans les duels. Il a néanmoins des faiblesses techniques crosse en main et peut être battu en un contre un par des attaquants talentueux.
Connu pour son rôle dans le droit du sport, même si son nom est moins célèbre que celui de Jean-Marc Bosman. En 1992, à la fin de son contrat avec l'EHC Dynamo Berlin, il voulut rejoindre Ratingen. Le Dynamo demanda une compensation de 140 000 marks (environ 72 000 euros). Cette somme fut contestée devant les tribunaux allemands et déclarée nulle en 1996 par le Tribunal fédéral allemand du travail. L'arrêt Kienass complète donc l'arrêt Bosman pour légiférer les transferts sportifs entre clubs allemands.
Drafté par les Bruins de Boston en 1991. 97 sélections pour les différentes équipes d'Allemagne (RDA et réunifiée). Il a fréquenté la DEL jusqu'à ses 37 ans.
