A fourth generation Canadian. Great grandparents originated from Japan. Talented and highly sought player as a junior. Played for the Hamilton Huskies between the age of nine and fifteen.
Was the Scholastic Player of the Year in the OHL. Drafted in the second round by Montreal Canadiens in 1990. Attended a couple of NHL camps and played in the ECHL and AHL. Moved to Japan in 1994 and played there for 14 years, winning six titles. Obtained Japanese citizenship just prior to the 1998 Olympics.
Retired in 2009 and then played another year of Senior Hockey in Canada. Coached junior hockey in Canada.

Immigré japonais au Canada mais de quatrième génération, ce sont ses arrière-grands-parents qui débarquèrent en Amérique du Nord.
Ryan Kuwabara fit donc sa formation de hockeyeur au Canada et se révéla un jeune homme très prometteur lors de son passage aux Hamilton Huskies entre neuf et quinze ans.
Recruté par les Ottawa 67's avec lesquels il sera consacré "joueur universitaire de l'année" en OHL. Drafté par les Canadiens de Montréal en 1990, il fera deux camps de présaison NHL mais restera confiné à l'ECHL et l'AHL. Partira donc au Japon à 22 ans où il passera en tout quatorze saisons (six titres nationaux), entrecoupées d'une seule en ligue britannique. Devenu Japonais juste avant les JO de Nagano, comme tant d'autres Canadiens résidant sur l'île, c'est étonnant. Et - oh ! - ils étaient tous hockeyeurs.
Parti à la retraite en 2009 après une saison et Corée du Sud et une autre en MHL, au Canada. Devenu entraîneur de jeunes au Canada.
