Huge defenceman (196 cm) who plays a physical game and is good at clearing the slot. He also has a good shot.
Started in attack and was best Under 12 forward in Latvia in 2007. Later became a defenceman because of his big frame.
Latvian champion 2012 with Liepaja six days after his 17th birthday. Like many Latvian players he had to take an uneasy way to become a professional hockey player. After two junior years in Russia (MHL-B) he got only an amateur contract in Norwegian second league and had to get a full-time job in construction field.
He weighted 116 kg in his first call with national team in April 2018 but lost eight kilograms to crack Dinamo Riga KHL roster. Afterwards he got to play in Swedish and Czech elite leagues.

Défenseur au gabarit énorme (196 cm) avec un bon jeu physique, notamment pour nettoyer son enclave. Doté également d'un bon tir.
Il a débuté à l'avant et a même été meilleur attaquant de moins de 12 ans de Lettonie en 2007. Sa taille imposante l'a naturellement fait passer en défense par la suite.
Champion de Lettonie 2012 avec son club formateur de Liepaja six jours après son 17e anniversaire. Comme beaucoup de hockeyeurs lettons il n'a pas eu de voie toute trace vers une carrière de hockeyeur professionnel. Après deux années juniors en Russie (MHL-B) il part en deuxième division norvégienne, en amateur, dans un club qui ne fournit que l'équipement (Hasle/Løren), ce qui l'oblige à travailler à côté dans le bâtiment.
Quand il revient dans le championnat letton à 22 ans, Bob Hartley le repère et le teste en équipe nationale en avril 2018, mais il se sent honteux lors de la pesée à son arrivée en sélection car la balance affiche 116 kg. Il en perd 8 pour intégrer le Dinamo Riga, gagne vraiment ses galons d'international et finit par jouer en élite suédoise puis tchèque.
