Older brother of Helmut Novy. Most sources have him born in the Czechoslovakian town of Běhánky (Pyhanken in German), one of seven local areas of the town Dubi (Eichwald in German) near Teplice. Although he had Czech roots he was born in Weißwasser, Germany.
Vital cog of East German defence despite his small size (170 cm, 72 kg). Represented German Democratic Republic 124 times (33+19).
Ten-time East German champion with Dynamo Weißwasser from 1956 to 1965.
During the 1950s a man named Erich Novy pretended to join West German team BFC Preußen. A teammate lent him his passport so that he could make a trip to the Bavarian town of Pegnitz with the team. After they arrived, the man confessed he couldn't skate. He was another Erich Novy, also born in Weißwasser. He just wanted to escape to the West but had no money to do so. He remained in Pegnitz and got married there.
After his retirement in 1967 the real Erich Novy worked as a coach in Weißwasser.
Passed away after a long illness at 79. Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Frère aîné de Helmut Novy. Beaucoup de sources le disent né dans la ville tchécoslovaque de Běhánky (Pyhanken en allemand), une des sept subdivisions de la ville de Dubi (Eichwald en allemand) près de Teplice. Même s'il avait des origines tchèques, il est en fait né à Weißwasser en Allemagne.
Maillon vital de la défense est-allemande malgré son petit gabarit (170 cm, 72 kg). 124 sélections avec la RDA, 52 points (33+19).
Dix fois de suite champion d'Allemagne de l'Est avec le Dynamo Weißwasser de 1956 à 1965.
Dans les années 1950 un Erich Novy s'est présenté au dirigeant du club ouest-allemand des BFC Preußen en disant vouloir les rejoindre. Un coéquipier lui a prêté ses papiers pour qu'il fasse le déplacement avec l'équipe à Pegnitz en Bavière. Arrivé sur place, cet homme qui ne savait pas patiner a expliqué qu'il s'appelait bien Erich Novy et était né à Weißwasser mais n'était qu'un homonyme. Il a avoué qu'il voulait juste fuir à l'Ouest sans en avoir les moyens financiers, et a refait sa vie à Pegnitz où il s'est marié.
Le véritable Erich Novy, quant à lui, est devenu entraîneur au sein du Dynamo Weißwasser après sa retraite en 1967.
Décédé d'une longue maladie à 79 ans. Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
