Younger brother of Helmut Novy. Like his brother he is listed everywhere as being born in the small Czech village of Běhánky near Teplice and Ústí nad Labem but he was born in Weißwasser. Part of the Weißwasser hockey program since 1953.
Represented German Democratic Republic 200 times (50+24).
Originally a winger he was converted to a defenceman with national team but remained a forward with Weißwasser.
Ten-time East German champion with Dynamo Weißwasser (from 1962 to 1965 and from 1969 to his forced retirement in 1974).
In 1974 Stasi summoned him and ordered him to quit ice hockey. He was told it was because of his wife, but never knew what secret police blamed her for.
Workshop chief in geological research for coal resource exploration.
After german reunification he turned West and worked as a mechanic and a fitter, incuding in Austria and in the Netherlands. Settled in Bad Driburg (near Paderborn) in his old days.
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Frère cadet d'Erich Novy. Comme son frère il est listé partout comme natif du petit village tchèque de Běhánky près de Teplice et Ústí nad Labem mais il est aussi né à Weißwasser, où il a intégré les rangs du club de hockey sur glace à 9 ans.
200 sélections avec la République Démocratique Allemande (RDA), 74 points (50+24).
Ailier à l'origine, il finit sa carrière en défense en équipe nationale mais reste attaquant en club.
Dix fois champion d'Allemagne de l'Est avec le Dynamo Weißwasser, de 1962 à 1965 puis de 1969 à sa retraite forcée en 1974.
En 1974 il est convoqué par la Stasi qui lui intime l'ordre d'arrêter le hockey. On lui dit que c'est à cause de son épouse, mais pas ce que la police politique reprochait à celle-ci. Dégoûté, il ne rejouera jamais au hockey sur glace.
Chef d'atelier dans un bureau d'études géologiques qui cherche des veines de charbon dans le sous-sol de Lusace.
À la réunification allemande, il se dirige vers l'ouest et travaille comme mécanicien ou monteur, y compris aux Pays-Bas ou en Allemagne. Il s'installe pour ses vieux jours à Bad Driburg, près de Paderborn mais loin de tout hockey.
Intronisé au Hall of Fame du hockey allemand.
