Son of Finnish parents, growing up without his father. His mother who worked as a servant, was originally from Helsinki, Finland. She put him with a fosterfamily when he was only three months old. He was adopted by the Karlsson family, where the father in that family passed away in 1923. Nurmela had Finnish citizenship in the 1920s.
Had great stick technique and was a superb skater. Acrobatic and elegant player. Always showed good fighting spirit in games and never gave up. Quick thinker on the ice.
Began playing for Helgalunds-Klubben in 1936. Also a good football and bandy player.
Represented Sweden in 112 official games (84 goals), plus another 41 unofficial games (27 goals).
In 1954 he was chosen as the best Swedish player at the World Championships. Chosen as the best Swedish left wing for the 1940s decade.
Also chosen by leading sportsjournalists as one of the three best Swedish left wings of all time in 1956. Inducted into the Swedish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Fils de parents finlandais, il a grandi sans père. Sa mère, qui travaillait comme domestique, était originaire de Helsinki. Elle l'a placé chez une nourrice quand il avait trois mois. Il a été adopté par la famille Karlsson, dont le père est décédé en 1923. Nurmela avait la nationalité finlandaise dans les années 1920.
Magnifique patineur avec une superbe technique de crosse. Joueur élégant et acrobatique. Toujours combatif en match, il ne lâchait jamais. Réflexion rapide sur la glace.
Il a commencé le hockey sur glace au Helgalunds-Klubben en 1936. C'était aussi un bon joueur de football et de bandy.
112 sélections, 84 buts, auquel s'ajoutent 27 buts en 41 matches non officiels avec la Suède (principalement contre des clubs).
Meilleur Suédois aux Mondiaux 1954. Élu meilleur ailier gauche suédois des années 1940. Élu par les journalistes sportifs parmi les trois meilleurs ailiers gauches suédois de l'histoire en 1956. Intronisé dans le Hall of Fame du hockey suédois.
