Youngest of three children born to an African-American father and Québécois mother.
Born in Indiana but moved from his abusive father to Québec as a child.
Eventually lived in two foster homes before settling in the third one at the age of eight.
Grew up in Val-Bélair, Québec City, and started playing hockey with his new siblings.
One of the most intimidating players in the NHL during his era. An enforcer with a decent skating stride and hard shot.
Always willing to get his nose dirty in order for his team to succeed. Tenacious forechecker.
Collected almost 6000 penalty minutes during his playing career.
Was the victim of one of the most publicized incidents of on-ice violence in NHL history, when he was slashed in the head by Marty McSorley, during the 1999/2000 season.
Was a professional MMA fighter for a while.
His great-uncle Carl Brashear was the first African-American to be certified as a Master Diver in the U.S.Navy.
He was the inspiration for the Movie Men of Honor, in which he was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr.
He retired as a player after the conclusion of the 2014/15 season.
In November 2018, his business - Brash Properties 87 - went bankrupt and was sued in civil cases. Brashear was ordered to pay $ 200,000 for outstanding mortgages.
He was also arrested at his home in Québec City in 2019 and appeared in court on charges of mischief and possession of drugs. Brashear went on to work in a Tim Hortons outlet in Québec City, owned by former NHL’er Pierre Sévigny.

Né en Indiana mais est parti au Québec dans son enfance, séparé d'un père violent.
Il a vécu dans deux foyers d'accueil avant de s'installer dans un troisième, à l'âge de huit ans.
Il a grandi à Val-Bélair, dans la ville de Québec, et y commença à jouer au hockey avec ses nouveaux frères et soeurs.
L'un des joueurs les plus intimidants de la NHL de son époque. Il possédait aussi un patinage correct et un gros lancer.
Toujours disposé à aller au charbon et à la bagarre pour aider son équipe. Tenace au pressing.
Il récolta près de 6000 minutes de pénalité dans sa carrière.
Il fut victime de l'un des plus célèbres incidents sur la glace de l'histoire de la NHL, quand il reçut un coup de crosse au visage par Marty McSorley, pendant la saison 1999/2000.
Il fut un combattant professionnel dans la MMA pendant quelques temps.
Son grand oncle Carl Brashear fut le premier Afro-Américain à être certifié maître plongeur pour la marine américaine.

Donald a pris sa retraite de joueur à l'issue de la saison 2014/15.

En novembre 2018, son entreprise - Brash Properties 87 - fait faillite et est poursuivie en justice. Brashear doit payer 200 000 dollars pour des crédits excessifs.
Il fut aussi arrêté à son domicile de Québec en 2019 et a été inculpé pour possession de drogues. Il a ensuite été employé dans un restaurant Tim Hortons qui appartient à l'ancien joueur de NHL Pierre Sévigny.
