His great grandfather hailed from Oberlunkhofen and it is often given as his birthplace, but Damien was born in Bülach, Zürich.
Gritty but also a slick offensive forward with great speed and soft hands. Equally good at shooting and passing the puck.
Good offensive instincts and a fine shot. A bit undersized.
In 2012 he was named forward of the year and the MVP in the Swiss NLA-league.
His coach in Biel, Antti Törmänen, said of him: "Brunner is an artist you must not constrain. It's counterproductive to tell him to paint Mona Lisa today, he will do it one day anyway."
He could never win a title and had to miss Game 7 of 2023 Swiss final because of a back injury.
His wife Nina won a bronze medal in beach volley during 2024 Olympic Games before giving birth to their first child in 2025.
Damien retired suddenly in January 2025 after having another torn muscle when he was recovering from an injury.

Son arrière grand-père est d'Oberlunkhofen, souvent présentée comme sa ville natale, mais Damien est né à Bülach dans le canton de Zurich.
Attaquant offensif besogneux mais également fin mais une superbe vitesse et de bonnes mains. Aussi bon au lancer qu'à la passe.
De bons instincts offensifs et un lancer correct. Un peu petit (1m80).
En 2012 il fut désigné attaquant de l'année et MVP en LNA suisse avant de signer à Détroit en NHL. Son agent y dédaigne une proposition de prolongation de contrat et le style très défensif et cadré de New Jersey lui convient moins.
Son entraîneur à Bienne (son dernier club), Antti Törmänen, dira de lui : "Brunner est un artiste que l'on ne doit pas étouffer. C'est contre-productif de lui commander de peindre la Joconde aujourd'hui. Il le fera de toute façon tôt ou tard."
Il n'a jamais été champion, et manqué le match 7 de la finale 2023 à cause d'une blessure au dos.
Son épouse Nina a été médaillée de bronze en beach volley aux Jeux olympiques de Paris 2024, avant d'accoucher de leur premier enfant l'année suivante. Damien prend sa retraite soudaine en janvier 2025 quand il subit une déchirure musculaire alors qu'il est déjà en convalescence.
58 points (25+33) en 121 parties de saison régulière de NHL. 60 points (29+31) en 88 sélections avec la Suisse.
