His mother hailed from Nicaragua and father from Ireland. Born in Worcester, MA but grew up in Wilbraham, MA where he played for Wilbraham Falcons. As a Massachusetts native he naturally rooted for the Boston Bruins and his favorite players included Terry O’Reilly and Cam Neely. Had an excellent combination of size and hands.
When in the groove, he was an impact scorer. Also had both a booming shot and a mean streak. Struggled with consistency at various times in his career. Definitely lost a step later on in his career, and that led to lazy penalties.
Invited to Philadelphia Flyers training camp prior to the 2010-11 season, but didn’t make the cut. Announced his retirement on December 6, 2010. Stayed involved in hockey. Was the player development coach and then Assistant GM for Pittsburgh Penguins.
Inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

Fils d'une Nicaraguayenne et d'un Irlandais, Guerin est né à Worcester dans la Massachusetts avant de passer son enfance dans la ville voisine de Wilbraham, où il donnera ses premiers coups de patin avec les Falcons locaux. Grand fan des Bruins comme la plupart des gamins d l'Etat, il admirait Terry O'Reilly et Cam Neely.
Bill lui-même combinait à la fois le gabarit (100kg quand même) et la technique. Pouvait enquiller les buts quand il était d'humeur car il possédait la méchanceté et le tir du buteur. Malheureusement pas l'athlète le plus rigoureux qui soit, il a un peu perdu pied en approchant la trentaine, collectionnant pénalités inutiles et stats peu glorieuses.
Les Flyers tentèrent de le relancer avant l'année 2010-2011 mais il n'avait plus le niveau. Guerin annonça donc son retrait des glaces le 6 décembre 2010. Resté dans ce sport en tant que cadre technique dans l'organisation des Penguins.
Introduit au Hall of fame du hockey US.
