Coachable and solid two-way player who was considered as a pretty complete player. Good skater, stick technique, physically adequate, feel for the game and anticipation were some of his strong points.
Grew up idolizing Vaclav Nedomanský. Made his debut in the Swedish elite league as a 16-year old. Highly regarded as a junior.
Chicago Blackhawks was the first NHL team that showed an interest in him. Came to the NHL as the No. 1 ranked European player in 1978/79.
Liked to play and watch football. Formed a line together with Håkan Loob and Tomas Sandström. That line was a big part of helping Sweden winning their first World Championship gold in 25 years (1987). Spent his last six seasons playing in Austria, winning five straight league titles and European league with Feldkirch. Retired as a player in 1999.
Became an ice hockey coach, at the helm of the Swedish National Team for several years, leading them to an Olympic and World Championship gold medal in 2006. Seems to have lost his sparkle as a coach since.

Attaquant défensif discipliné, sans faille majeure dans son jeu: patinage, technique, aptitudes physiques, flair, anticipation, il avait tout. Prit Vaclav Nedomanský comme modèle de jeunesse et fit ses débuts en championnat de Suède à seulement 16 ans. Très tôt considéré comme une grande promesse.
Les Blackhawks furent les premiers en NHL à manifester leur intérêt et "Gusty" débarqua en 1978, à 20 ans, dans la grande ligue après avoir été le meilleur Européen de la draft.
Cet amateur de foot formait une très belle ligne en Tre Kronor avec Håkan Loob et Tomas Sandström. Ce trio porta d'ailleurs la Suède vers son premier titre de championne du monde en 25 ans, lors du printemps 1987. Peu après les JO de 1992, il alla finir sa carrière en Autriche, à Feldkirch, club avec lequel il remportera cinq titres de champion consécutifs et l'EHL.
Devenu entraîneur, d'abord en Suisse, puis en Suède et à la tête de la Tre Kronor, avec laquelle il fera le doublé olympique et mondial en 2006. Son parcours est plus erratique depuis.
