Also played football as a youngster. Offensively gifted defenseman who was voted the best defender at the 1955 World Championships.
Won the Czechoslovakian school championships in 1947 and as a defenseman was the top scorer of the tournament with 29 goals.
Represented Czechoslovakia 114 times (34 goals). Often paired with František Tikal. Captained the National team between 1952-60.
Retired as a player in 1964 and became an ice hockey coach.
Inducted into the Czech and IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ce défenseur très doué, qui a aussi joué au football dans ses jeunes années, a été élu meilleur défenseur des championnats du monde 1955.
Vainqueur du championnat scolaire de Tchécoslovaquie en 1947 et meilleur buteur du tournoi avec 29 buts alors qu'il jouait défenseur.
Cadre de l'équipe nationale tchécoslovaque, il amassera 114 sélections sous son maillot (34 buts). Capitaine pendant neuf années (1952-1960), formant souvent paire avec František Tikal.
Prend sa retraite à 37 ans et devient entraîneur, notamment de la Tchécoslovaquie à la fin des années 70.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey mondial et du hockey tchèque.
