Son of Sami Kapanen and grandson of Hannu Kapanen. Although Kasperi Kapanen was born in Kuopio, he grew up in the United States. He spent much of his formative years in Philadelphia where his father played for the Flyers. Kapanen also lived in Farmington, Connecticut near Hartford and the Research Triangle region of North Carolina, prior to his father's trade from the Whalers/Hurricanes franchise.
Quick sniper-like release of his shot. Used sometimes on the point on the power play. Good skater and skilled at freeing himself from coverage to get open. Not overly big, which somewhat limits his offensive production. Average defensively and not always playing with the necessary intensity.

Bien qu'étant né à Kuopio en Finlande, il a passé la majeure partie de ses années en Amérique du Nord à suivre la carrière de Sami. À Farmington d'abord, dans l'État du Connecticut près de Hartford, puis dans le "Research Triangle" en Caroline du Nord, quand Sami suivit le déménagement des Whalers en Caroline. Vécut aussi à Philadelphie après le transfert de papa chez les Flyers.
Tireur redoutable dont le lancer part très vite. Fait parfois office de quatrième attaquant en supériorité. Ses qualités de patinage l'autorisent à se débarrasser du marquage adverse et s'ouvrir des espaces. Pas très étoffé, ce qui limite son rendement offensif. Ne compense pas par son investissement défensif ni par une implication de tous instants.
