Son of Hannu Kapanen and father of Kasperi Kapanen. His favorite team growing up was the Edmonton Oilers and his favorite players included Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri. Excellent two-way forward with an outstanding work ethic and game smartness. Energetic and fine skater with a decent shot.
He won NHL All-Star Game fastest skater contest twice.
In 2001 he was chosen as the best forward at the World Championships and also made the All-Star team. Announced his retirement on March 13, 2014. Was the KalPa franchise owner, GM and coach.

Double vainqueur du concours du patineur le plus rapide au Match des étoiles NHL.
Meilleur attaquant des Mondiaux 2001, élu dans l'équipe-type. Quand il a arrêté de jouer le 13 mars 2014, il était déjà devenu le propriétaire, manager et entraîneur du KalPa Kuopio, son club formateur.
