Son-in-law of ex-NHL’er and Czechoslovakian international František Černík. First skated and played hockey at the age of six for Slezan Frýdek-Místek. Big, hard hitting and physical defenseman with a booming shot. Was a solid point producer. Could also log plenty of minutes and was valuable in front of his own goal.
Struggled against speedy wingers and occasionally made critical mistakes in the defensive zone. Was a bit inconsistent in all facets of the game.
Was a World Championship All-Star in 1999. Kubina also won three World Championship titles and one Stanley Cup title. Announced his retirement on December 20, 2013. Regarded Martin Saint-Louis as the toughest competitor that he played against.

Beau-fils de František Černík, un ancien international tchécoslovaque. Kubina débute le hockey à six au Slezan de Frýdek-Místek. Il devient vite un défenseur physique, puissant et rude au slap en béton. Marquait beaucoup et sa résistance l'autorisait à jouer beaucoup.
Très sûr en général dans sa zone à l'exception d'étonnantes erreurs qui pouvaient de temps en temps émailler son jeu. Se montrait parfois irrégulier et en difficulté face aux ailiers rapides (normal, à 110 kilogrammes).
Trois fois champion du monde, vainqueur de la Coupe Stanley en 2004 avec le Lightning, élu dans l'équipe-type des championnats du monde 1999. Annonça sa retraite le 20 décembre 2013. Selon lui, il n'y avait aucun adversaire plus retors que Martin Saint-Louis.
