Slovakian father/Polish mother. Born in Ukraine where his father worked (and met his mother). They had absolutely no interest in sports.
Moved to Slovakia as a three year old and grew up in Poprad where he first played ice hockey at the age of eight with Juraj, one of his two older brothers and his mentor.
He kept his Ukrainian citizenship until 1993 so that he didn’t have to do his military service.
Liked to use his deceptively hard wrist shot from anywhere. Didn't get a lot of assists because he shot the puck so often.
Very strong on both special teams. Excellent skating speed in his prime, being one of the fastest skaters in the world during the 1990s.
Not very physical and could take stupid penalties.
First Slovakian born and trained player to score 500 goals in the NHL. Twice the top goal scorer in the NHL.
Represented Slovakia 47 times (35 goals). Won the "Zlaty Puk" (Golden Puck) three times as the best player in Slovakia.
At the 2002 World Championships he scored the game winning goal in the finals against Russia. It is considered to be the most important goal in Slovakian ice hockey history. For his achievements that year he was voted Slovakia's athlete of the year.
Officially announced his retirement on October 28, 2007 and became the general manager of Slovakia's national team until 2011.

De père slovaque et de mère polonaise. Né en Ukraine où son père travaillait (et rencontra la mère de Peter). Il ne présentait absolument aucun intérêt pour les sports.
Il arriva en Slovaquie à trois ans et a grandi à Poprad où il joua au hockey pour la première fois à huit ans avec Juraj, l'un de ses deux frères aînés et son mentor.
Il garda sa nationalité ukrainienne jusqu'en 1993, ainsi il n'eut pas à faire son service militaire.
Tir du poignet étonnamment puissant trompeusement lourd qu'il aimait utiliser de n'importe où, raison pour laquelle il récoltait peu de mentions d'aide.
Fort en supériorité comme en infériorité numérique. Sa grande vitesse de patinage en faisait un des joueurs les plus rapides des années 1990.
Pas très physique il pouvait prendre des pénalités stupides.
Premier joueur slovaque de naissance et de formation à atteindre les 500 buts en NHL. Deux fois meilleur buteur de NHL.
Trois fois "Zlaty Puk" (Palet d'Or) du meilleur joueur de Slovaquie. 47 sélections en équipe nationale (35 buts).
Aux championnats du monde 2002 il a inscrit le but vainqueur de la finale contre la Russie. Ce but est considéré comme le plus important de l'histoire du hockey slovaque. Pour cet accomplissement il reçut cette année là le titre d'athlète slovaque de l'année.
Il annonça officiellement sa retraite le 28 octobre 2007 et devint manager général de la sélection slovaque jusqu'en 2011.
