Grew up with eight sisters. Small player (5'7", 172cm) but very resilient.
Outstanding skater and stickhandler who seldom had a bad game. Idol of Václav Nedomanský. Changed his game from being a highly skilled forward to a hardworking checker.
Started in the top league with Plzeň in 1957. In 19 league seasons with Brno he managed to score 639 points (409+230), a club record. League top scorer in 1964 and 1970. Captained Brno (1969-73) and led them to seven straight league titles (1960-66).
backbone of the national team for over a decade, playing 210 games (75 goals). Captain at the 1972 Olympics.
Declined to participate in the 1972 World Championships. The reason was that during the 1972 Olympics, the Soviets wanted to strike a deal with the Czechoslovaks about playing a draw in order for the Soviets to win the gold. Černý as the captain refused and promised to never play for the national team again.
Retired in 1979 after having played one season in Austria with ATSE Graz (33 points in 32 games). Became a hockey coach.
Inducted into the Czech Hockey Hall of Fame.

Grandit entouré de huit sœurs. De petite taille (1,72 m) mais rempli d'abnégation.
Excellent patineur et manieur de crosse, très régulier, il ne passait jamais à côté d'un match. Le jeune Václav Nedomanský en fit son idole. Parvint à changer son jeu en cours de carrière : d'ailier talentueux, il devint un courageux attaquant défensif.
Il a débuté en élite avec Plzeň in 1957. Ses 635 points (405+230) en 671 matches étalés sur 19 saisons constituent le record du club de Brno, dont il fut capitaine de 1969 à 1973. Meilleur marqueur du championnat tchécoslovaque à deux reprises (1964 et 1970) et vainqueur de sept titres consécutifs (1960-1966).
Pilier de son équipe nationale (210 sélections, 75 buts). Capitaine de sa sélection aux JO de 1972, ce qui le conduira indirectement à refuser de participer aux Mondiaux 1972. En effet, lors de ces Jeux de 1972, l'URSS tenta d'arracher un accord aux Tchécoslovaques consistant à s'arranger sur un match nul afin d'assurer l'or aux Soviétiques. En tant que capitaine, Černý refusa et promit ensuite de ne plus jamais porter le maillot de sa sélection.
Arrêta de jouer en 1979 pour devenir entraîneur. Tira sa révérence sur sa seule saison à l'étranger, une année en Autriche avec l'ATSE Graz couronnée de 33 buts en 32 matches.
Introduit au Hall of Fame du hockey tchécoslovaque.
