Started to play football for Grunwald Halemba, a sport club presided by his father, but soon preferred to play ice hockey.
Youngest player to start in the Polish ice hockey league at the age of 15 in 1972.
Versatile defenseman who could play on both sides. Great on-ice vision and playmaking capabilities of a center. Excellent skating but not very good slapshot.
Twisted his knee playing basketball one week before 1976 Olympic Games and played "only" four Olympic tournaments.
Captained the Polish national team between 1982-1994. League All-Star in 1980, 1983 and 1988. Polish player of the year 1983 and 1988. Played 828 league games (134 goals). Represented Poland 248 times (54 goals).
Carried the Polish flag at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics. Was a gym teacher.
He spent only his first coaching year in Poland and go to Germany and mainly Switzerland. Won many Swiss junior titles with the GCK Lions.
Inducted into the IIHF HHOF.
He married Danutą Chrószcz, a basketball player. His son Jakub Gruth (196 cm) chose basketball.

Il a commencé à jouer au football pour le Grunwald Halemba, un club présidé par son père, mais a vite préféré jouer au hockey sur glace.
Plus jeune joueur à débuter dans le championnat polonais, à seulement 15 ans en 1972.
Défenseur polyvalent qui pouvait jouer soit à droite, soit à gauche. Sa vision du jeu lui permettait d'orienter le jeu aussi bien qu'un centre. Excellent patineur, il n'a toutefois pas un très bon slap et utilise peu son physique.
Il s'est tordu le genou en jouant au basket une semaine avant les JO 1976 et a donc participé à "seulement" quatre tournois olympiques.
Capitaine régulier de la sélection polonaise entre 1982 et 1994. Élu trois fois dans l'équipe-type du championnat de Pologne (1980, 1983, 1988) et deux fois joueur polonais de l'année (1983, 1988). 828 matches de championnat entre Pologne et Suisse (134 buts), 248 sélections nationales (54 buts).
Porte-drapeau de la délégation olympique polonaise à Calgary en 1988 et à Albertville en 1992. Professeur d'éducation physique.
Comme il parle allemand depuis son passage comme joueur à Zurich, il ne passe qu'une saison comme entraîneur en Pologne et fait carrière un an en Allemagne (Salzgitter) et surtout en Suisse (Saint-Moritz, Thurgovie, trois ans au SC Küsnacht, puis un long engagement pour les ZSC et GCK Lions avec lesquels il remporte de nombreux championnats junior élite).
Ses états de service lui ont valu d'être nommé au Hall of Fame de l'IIHF.
Il a épousé Danutą Chrószcz, une joueuse de basketball. Son fils Jakub Gruth (196 cm) a choisi le basket.
