His youth coaches in Sokil were Anatoli Nikolaev and Vadim Seberkov.
Moved to North America at 18 and played three years in Major Junior leagues (WHL and OHL) and two years of pro hockey in the ECHL with one point-per-game.
Unnoticed by the NHL because of his small size (172 cm, 76 kg), Matvichuk returned back to Europe at 23 and played in Russia, Sweden, Belarus and Ukraine (with another brief spell in the ECHL).
He had to debut with Ukraine in November 1999 during WC qualifying tournament but was hit in the face by a puck during the last evening training before departure and had to eat through a straw during three weeks. Nevertheless he represented Ukraine 134 times, scoring 61 points (26+35).
The last decade he played for Sokil Kyiv and retired in 2013. Matvichuk won the Ukrainian league title five times.

Il aurait dû débuter avec l'Ukraine en novembre 1999 aux qualifications mondiales mais reçut un palet dans la mâchoire à l'entraînement et passa trois semaines à se nourrir avec une paille. Il connut néanmoins 134 sélections avec l'Ukraine, pour 61 points (26+35).
Il termina sa carrière au Sokik Kyiv et remporta cinq titres de champion d'Ukraine. Retraité en 2013.
