Solid goaltender who was a mainstay on the German national team for many years.
Merk holds the distinction of scoring a goal in two consecutive seasons in the local Berlin derby between BFC Preussen and Eisbären Berlin in 1992 and 1993.
He represented West Germany/Germany 128 times. Retired in 2002.
Team manager and goaltending coach for the German National Team (seniors and juniors).
Inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.

Merk tient la particularité d'avoir marqué un but lors de deux saisons consécutives dans le derby de Berlin entre le BFC Preussen et Eisbären Berlin en 1992 et 1993.
