Grew up in Varna, ON. His brother Cal also played in the NHL and his sister Tara also played hockey.
Rooted for Edmonton Oilers growing up and his favourite player was Joe Thornton.
Strong two-way center with elite hands. Constantly hustling and working. Very good leadership qualities.
Sound defensively and decent offensively. Fairly inconsistent at times, especially in the scoring and physicality departments.
In 2014 he won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as the most sportsmanlike player in the NHL. He became only the second player in NHL history to play a full season and receive two or fewer penalty minutes (Butch Goring being the other one).
Picked up several nicknames, some of them being "Radar", "Rhino", "Snook" and "Factor 39".
Top face-off player at the 2017 World Championships (69,64%). Among faceoff leaders in the NHL every year.
Won the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) and Frank Selke (best defensive forward) in 2019 when he led the St. Louis Blues to their first Stanley Cup title.
