He was invited to a hockey practice at the age of seven and was hooked on the sport from day one.
His mother and father were bank tellers, his sister worked for a stock brokerage firm and his brother as a police officer.
Obara attended Kushiro City Kageun Junior High School, then Tomakomai High School which was attached to Komazawa University, and finally he entered Waseda University, one of Japan's most prestigious schools where he studied social science.
Physically very fit player and a good skater.
Adventurous person who came to North America to try professional hockey in 2003.
It was a good learning experience for him and he returned to Japan after one season.
He went on to have a very good playing career in Japan, captaining several teams.
Obara was still active in 2023/24 playing for Tokyo Free Blades.

Invité à une initiation de hockey à l'âge de sept ans, il fut mordu de ce sport dès le premier jour.
Ses parents étaient employés de banque, sa vur travaillait pour une société de bourses et son frère était officier de police.
Obara a fréquenté le lycée Kageun de la ville de Kushiro, puis le lycée Tomakomai qui était rattaché à l'université de Komazawa, et enfin il entra à l'Université Waseda, l'un des établissements les plus prestigieux du pays où il étudia les sciences sociales.
Un joueur en très bonne condition physique et bon patineur.
D'une nature baroudeuse, il partit en Amérique du Nord pour tenter le hockey professionnel en 2003.
Ce fut une expérience très enrichissante pour lui quand il retourna au pays la saison suivante.
Il connait une excellente carrière au Japon, où il fut capitaine de plusieurs équipes.
Obara est toujours actif au cours de la saison 2023/24, où il porte les couleurs du Tokyo Free Blades.
