Came from a hockey family. His brother Günter Lupzig remained his whole career in Straubing. He is the best ever scorer for this club and his jersey has been raised under the roof. Andreas left at 15 to Landshut, the club of his childhood idol Erich Kühnhackl.
Andreas was a pretty good-sized winger who could play with a little bit of a mean streak. He spent a lot of time in the weight room. He played a responsible two-way hockey with a physical edge.
Lupzig was drafted in the NHL by Chicago Blackhawks 1988 but never left Germany. He was invited to their training camp in 1990 but tore his cruciate ligaments just before. He couldn't play during the whole season (1990/91) because of this knee injury.
Played 715 German elite league games, scoring 317 points (139+178) and picking up 1063 penalty minutes. German champion 1995 with Cologne.
91 games with German national team, 11 goals.
Retired in 2005 after another knee injury. Went on to coach in the lower German leagues while living in Cologne with his wife and daughter. Spent summers in his secondary house in Sardinia.

Le hockey a toujours été la passion de la famille Lupzig. Son frère Günter, un buteur instinctif qui est resté fidèle à Straubing, a vu son maillot retiré sous le toit par ce club dont il détient tous les records statistiques. Andreas, lui, est parti à 15 ans à Landshut, le club de son idole d'enfance Erick Kühnhackl qu'il considère toujours inégalé.
Andreas était un ailier de bon gabarit (187 cm, 90 kg) qui jouait avec un petit fond de méchanceté. Il passait beaucoup de temps en salle de musculation. Son style de hockey, responsable dans les deux sens de la glace, était mâtiné d'impact physique.
Lupzig fut drafté en NHL en 1988 par les Blackhawks de Chicago. Ils l'invitèrent à leur camp d'entraînement en 1990, mais il se déchira les ligaments croisés du genou pendant la préparation et manqua la saison complète (1990/91).
Il joua 715 matchs en élite allemande (Bundesliga et DEL), inscrivant 317 points (139+178) et récoltant 1063 minutes de pénalité. Champion d'Allemagne 1995.
91 sélections en équipe d'Allemagne, 11 buts.
Retraité en 2005 à cause d'une autre blessure au genou, devenu entraîneur dans les divisions inférieures allemandes. Il continue de vivre à Cologne avec sa femme et sa fille, et passe l'été dans sa résidence secondaire en Sardaigne.
