His mother put him in a figure skating school when he was a child, but he persuaded her to put him in a hockey school instead.
Player who had great natural offensive instincts. Needed creative freedom to be effective.
Smooth-skating offensive defenseman in his earlier years. Liked to make spectacular end-to-end rushes.
Not afraid to make mistakes. Defense was definitely not his strong point.
Battled some personal problems for a few years which included what could be deemed as a drinking problem. Had a few DUI’s and went into rehab a couple of times.
He was Latvia's highest paid athlete. Later carried the Latvian flag at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Announced his retirement on May 27, 2014. Assistant-coach in the KHL and for Latvian national team.
Owner of Latvia's first 18-hole golf course.

Sa mère le mit dans une école de patinage artistique, mais il sut la persuader de l'inscrire au hockey à la place.
Joueur aux excellents instincts offensifs naturels, qui a besoin de liberté créative pour être performant.
Défenseur offensif au patinage fluide à ses débuts, il adorait porter le palet d'un bout à l'autre de la glace.
Il ne craignait pas de faire des erreurs. La défense n'était clairement pas son point fort.
Il a combattu des problèmes d'alcool. Plusieurs conduites en état d'ébriété et cures de désintoxication.
Il fut un temps le sportif letton le mieux payé. Porte-drapeau de la Lettonie à la cérémonie d'ouverture des JO de Sotchi.
Il prit sa retraite le 27 mai 2014. Entraîneur-chef du Dinamo Riga à peine un mois, mais resté assistant-coach en KHL, et plus tard en équipe de Lettonie.
Propriétaire du premier golf à 18 trous de Lettonie.
564 points (167+397) en 875 parties dans la NHL.
