His father József Bartalis was an ice hockey player. He was a member of the Hungarian-speaking minority in Romania and left to Hungary just after Ceaucescu dictatorship fell down in 1990, the year his first son István was born.
István first played organized hockey at the age of ten for Győri ETO HC. His brother Balázs would later become a head coach in Győr.
Slick center with good skating and soft hands. Also used as a left wing.
Moved to Sweden at only 16 in order to improve his hockey skills.
Battled several injuries in his late career.

Son père József Bartalis était déjà hockeyeur. Membre de la communauté hongroise de Roumanie, il a quitté ce pays dès la chute de la dictature de Ceaucescu en 1990, année de naissance de son fils aîné.
István a commencé à jouer au hockey organisé à 10 ans au club du Győri ETO HC. Son frère cadet Balázs n'aura pas la même carrière de joueur maus deviendra plus tard entraîneur de Győr.
Centre malin avec un bon patinage et de bonnes mains. Également utilisé en tant qu'ailier gauche.
Il est parti en Suède à 16 ans afin d'améliorer son jeu.
Fréquemment blessé à la fin de sa carrière mais très persévérant.
