Clayton grew up in Chesterfield, an Illinois town but a St. Louis suburbs. He got hooked on ice hockey after his father Bryan - an accountant and financial consultant who grew up in a poor family in Texas - bought NHL season tickets to watch the Blues.
He played hockey on roller blades with his four-year-younger brother Jake in their homes' basement with real nets and fake boards painted on the concrete to make it look like a ice hockey rink. Five real-size player pictures were chosen by young Clayton on the walls: Crosby, Kane, Datsyuk, Ovechkin and Malkin. The goalie pictures behind the nets (Luongo and Kiprusoff) became almost erased after being hit by hundreds of pucks.
Won the gold medal at Under 18 World Championships in 2015 and was named MVP in 2016. Under 20 World Champion and named on the All-Star Team in 2017.
Outstanding offensive instincts and great speed. Solid playmaker and finisher. Excellent goal-scorer's touch and hockey IQ. Undersized for the NHL (at 178 cm/5'10"). Only average strength at best.
Between 2014 and 2016, Keller scored a total of 189 (71+118) points in the US National Team Development Program, which was an all-time best (later broken by Jack Hughes).
First captain in Utah Hockey Club history after the franchise relocated from Arizona in 2024.

Clayton a grandi à Chesterfield, ville de l'Illinois mais située en banlieue de Saint-Louis (Missouri). Il s'est pris de passion pour le hockey quand son père Bryan - un expert comptable qui a grandi dans une famille pauvre du Texas - a acheté des abonnements pour assister aux rencontres de NHL des Blues.
Il a joué hockey sur des rollers avec son frère cadet Jake dans la cave de leur maison, aménagée avec de vrais filets de hockey et de fausses balustrades peintes sur les murs de béton, ornés des collages de photos grandeurs natures de cinq joueurs choisis par le petit Clayton : Crosby, Kane, Datsyuk, Ovechkin et Malkin. Les photos des gardiens derrière les buts (Luongo et Kiprusoff) ont fini presque effacées par les impacts de centaines de palets.
Champion du monde des moins de 18 ans en 2015 et MVP en 2016. Champion du monde des moins de 20 ans en 2017, nommé sur l'équipe-type.
Instincts offensifs exceptionnels avec une vitesse fulgurante et des qualités de finisseur et de passeur. Il combine en effet la touche de buteur et l'intelligence de jeu de hockey. Taille réduite (1,78m) et force moyenne.
Ses 189 points (71+118) inscrits au sein du Programme de développement de la fédération américaine ont constitué un record, battu ensuite par Jack Hughes.
Premier capitaine d'Utah après le déménagement de la franchise depuis l'Arizona en 2024.
