Born in Bolzano but grew up in Ortisei. From a well-known sports family.
Son of former Italian hockey national Erwin Kostner. His sister Carolina was a figure skating world champion in 2012. His cousin Isolde was a three-time Olympic medalist in Alpine Skiing.
Played in Switzerland at the age of 13 and later moved to Germany at the age of 15. DNL champion 2008 with Mannheim. Tried to further improve his hockey skills and played in Finland at the age of 17. Hard-working and ambitious player.

Né à Bolzano, il grandit à Ortisei. Issu de la fameuse famille Kostner, peuplée d'athlètes d'élite en sports d'hiver. Son père Erwin est un ancien cadre de la Nazionale et s'est reconverti entraîneur, sa soeur Carolina a été championne du monde de patinage artistique (en 2012) et sa cousine Isolde a remporté trois médailles olympiques et quatre titres mondiaux en ski alpin.
Simon, joueur travailleur et ambitieux, est parti très tôt à l'étranger pour affronter une réalité plus consistante. Suisse à 13 ans, Allemagne à 15 ans (Champion de DNL 2008 avec Mannheim), Finlande à 17 ans (quatre matches en Liiga quatre ans plus tard), avant de revenir en Italie, un an à Fassa puis à Renon.
