A legend in Finnish hockey. Broad center with above average speed. Soft hands and fine puckhandling skills.
He was always creative and had some flair. Fine playmaker. Decent on faceoffs.
Not very physical and could lose possession of the puck when checked closely.
Gold medalist at the 1986 European Junior Championships and the 1987 World Junior Championships.
He had a serious wrist injury in his only playoff game with Lugano in 1995. He came back only for World Championships... and helped Finland to win an historic gold medal.
His first daughter was born during Lillehammer Olympic Games in 1994. He first saw her picture thanks to a fax organized by a sports journalist. Janne said he would call the baby "Hammer" if it turned out to be a boy. Since it was a girl she would be called "Lille", a nickname which remained even if her official name was Katarina.
When his second child Oskari was coming Ojanen missed a national team call (for 1995 Deutschland Cup) for the only time in his career. The third child and second son Mikael was born in the morning of the 2001 semifinal last game. On the evening Ojanen helped Tappara to qualify for the finals after a 13-year break.
On November 28, 2009 Ojanen surpassed Arto Javanainen's 16-year old scoring record in the SM-liiga, becoming the all-time top scorer.
Ojanen was also the last SM-liiga player allowed to play without a visor before it became mandatory.
Tappara Tampere’s captain the last ten years of his career (2000-2010). Assistant coach in Tappara 2011/12. His number 8 jersey has been retired by Tappara.
An entrepreneur, Ojanen founded in 2006 JM Consept Oy, selling business gifts. From 2015 he also became assistant-coach (in the evenings after his workday) for Pyry Nokia, his son Oskari's team.
Represented Finland 205 times, scoring 124 points (50+74). Inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

Pas très physique, il pouvait perdre le contrôle du palet sur un marquage de près.
Médaillé d'or des championnats d'Europe juniors 1986 et des Mondiaux juniors 1987.
Il joue un seul match de LNA pour Lugano en fin de saison 1995, inscrit une mention d'assistance sur l'unique but de la partie, puis se fait une blessure ouverte au poignet après 18 minutes. Il revient pour le championnat du monde et participe au titre historique de la Finlande.
Sa première fille est née lors des JO 1994 de Lillehammer. Il a pu voir sa photo sur un fax envoyé avec l'aide d'un journaliste finlandais. Quand la venue son deuxième enfant Oskari était proche Ojanen manqua une convocation en équipe nationale (pour la Deutschland Cup 1995) pour la seule fois de sa carrière. Son troisième enfant et second fils Mikael naquit le matin du troisième match du derby de Tampere en demi-finale 2001. Le soir Ojanen contribua à qualifir Tappara à sa première finale depuis 13 ans.
Le 28 novembre 2009 Ojanen dépassa le record vieux de 16 ans d'Arto Javanainen pour devenir le meilleur marqueur de SM-liiga de tous les temps. Il a inscrit 799 points (283+516) en 876 matchs.
Ojanen a également été le dernier joueur de SM-liiga autorisé à jouer sans visière avant que cela ne devienne obligatoire.
Capitaine du Tappara Tampere les dix dernières années de sa carrière (achevée en 2010) et assistant-coach une saison en 2011/12.
Entrepreneur, Ojanen a fondé en 2006 l'entreprise JM Consept Oy, spécialisée dans les cadeaux d'entreprise.
En 2015 il est devenu assistant-coach (le soir après sa journée de travail) du Pyry Nokia, l'équipe de son fils Oskari.
Honoré parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijonat, n°206). Son numéro 8 a été retiré par Tappara.
205 sélections pour la Finlande, 124 points (50+74). 44 points (21+23) en 98 parties de saison régulière dans la NHL.
