Small goalie with great reflexes and quickness.
159 national team games with Latvia. Retired from national team after Olympic qualification tournament in September 2016.
Awarded the best goalie award in the Latvian league 1999, 2001 and 2002.
Longtime third goaltender behind Irbe and Naumovs. Started Latvia's first game in 2004 World Championships in Prague against the home country. The next morning, a delegate from Czech club Jihlava offered him a two-year contract with a salary he "never had dreamed of".
Came to Turin Olympic Games five days after his wife gave birth.
"Everything in my life – family, house and family well-being - came thanks to Latvian national team and Latvian hockey", did he declare.
In 2010 he scored a goal in the KHL, a game winner on January 7, 2010, becoming the second KHL goalie to achieve that feat (Ilya Proskuryakov was the first on January 25, 2009).
Announced his retirement on October 3, 2017. Went on to work as an assistant coach in Riga.

Gardien de petite taille avec d'excellents réflexes et une belle rapidité.
159 sélections en équipe de Lettonie, la première contre la France en 2000.
Désigné meilleur gardien de Lettonie en 1999, 2001 et 2002.
Longtemps troisième gardien derrière Irbe et Naumovs, il se voit donner sa chance en 2004 au premier match du championnat du monde à Prague contre le pays-hôte. Le lendemain matin, un représentant du club tchèque de Jihlava lui offre un contrat de deux ans avec un salaire qu'il n'aurait "jamais espéré avoir".
Il se rend aux Jeux olympiques de Turin cinq jours après l'accouchement de sa femme, qu'il confie aux soins de sa belle-mère.
"Tout ce qui est dans ma vie – famille, maison, mon bien-être et celui de ma famille - est grâce à l’équipe nationale lettone et au hockey letton", a-t-il déclaré.
Masalskis a marqué un but en KHL (but gagnant inscrit le 7 janvier 2010), devenant le deuxième gardien de KHL à le faire (Ilya Proskuryakov fut le premier le 25 janvier 2009).
Il annonce sa retraite internationale après la qualification olympique en septembre 2016 et sa retraite tout court le 3 octobre 2017. Devenu assistant coach du Dinamo Riga.
