Offensively-gifted defenseman who had decent size. Niinimaa was often used as a quarterback on powerplays where he used his hard shot to his advantage. He could also distribute pucks well to his teammates. Prone to mental mistakes and could lose his man in the defensive zone. Not always playing physically enough.
Part of Finnish first World champion team in 1995. Finnish champion 1994, 1996 and 2005. Swedish champion 2010.
Avid fisherman. In 2005 Niinimaa co-founded Club Teatria, a large rock concert hall in Oulu, and used his popularity to promote the venue. The original building was demolished in 2014 though. Another Club Teatria was built later.
He represented Finland 104 times, scoring 41 points (11+30). Niinimaa announced his retirement on February 10, 2014.

Défenseur doté d'un beau gabarit (185 cm, 100 kg) et de talents offensifs. Niinimaa était souvent utilisé en organisateur du jeu en supériorité numérique, où il utilisait son lancer puissant à son avantage. Il pouvait aussi distribuer de bons palets à ses coéquipiers. Il commettait parfois des erreurs mentales et pouvait perdre le marquage en zone défensive. Il ne jouait pas toujours assez physique.
Il a fait partie de la première équipe finlandaise championne du monde, en 1995. Champion de Finlande 1994, 1996 et 2005. Champion de Suède 2010.
Passionné de pêche, Niinimaa a aussi été en 2005 parmi les fondateurs du Club Teatria, conçue comme une des plus grandes salles de concert dédiées au rock en Finlande. Il a utilisé sa popularité pour promouvoir cette salle située à Oulu, mais le bâtiment originel a été détruit en 2014. C'est un autre Club Teatria qui a été reconstruit et existe de nos jours.
104 sélections en équipe de Finlande, 41 points (11+30). Il a annoncé sa retraite le 10 février 2014.
319 points marqués (54+265) en 741 parties de saison régulière de NHL.
Intronisé parmi les Lions du hockey finlandais (Jääkiekkoleijona, numéro 225).
